Hi Phil, While I'm a relative neophyte to all things *nix, I have had the experience of wrestling with fink and X11 on my mac for the last week. I do recall that the faq mentions you should touch .Xauthority in your home directory, also, make sure that you have your shell set up appropriately so it knows where your fink (and gnome) installation is. I believe the line is :
source /sw/bin/init.sh and it should be in your shell's startup profile (different shell types require different filenames to be present in the root of your home directory) hope this helps.
