After running fink self-update and fink update-all, I found the
following:
2003 ?? R 111:05.98 /sw/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m
artsmessage -l 3 -f
consuming one full cpu:

I was able to kill -9 artsd (kill by itself would not do the job). My
immediate problem is solved, but I thought i should report this.
It seems that most of the fink update-all effort went in to updating a
lot of kde stuff, including qt to qt3-3.1.1-4. This is in MacOS X
10.2.3 with the December Developer Tools. I use Apple X11.
It may be relevant that I had kde running before the update, but quit
kde and X11 before the update.
