If you are installing XFree86 via fink, then you need to remove the following directories (using "sudo rm"):
sudo rm /Applications/XDarwin.app /usr/X11R6/bin /etc/X11 If this fails, please post back the _exact_ error message (i.e. copy it from the terminal output) that you get. Alexander K. When I first installed XFree86 complete, I was able to launch x-windows. Then I downloaded some Fink apps, and x-windows would no longer launch. Then suddenly, somehow, the Developers folder disappeared from my hard drive. The below command to remove xFree and star over returned a No Such File (or something like it). And, as stated in a previous email, none of the components in that string showed up in any Search. With all the help given me so far, I am still unable to remove,and/or restore xFree to working order. If someone could run those EXACT commands by me one more time, I'll be happy to give it another go. Then, upon successful completion of restoring xfree, getting the steps once again on how to start fink apps in xfree (misplaced the previous email in an unscheduled email shuffle) should have me up and running. I don't remember it being so difficult (or difficult -At All-) the last time I had xfree and fink apps up and running. Many thanks for your patience. BTW, I get the strong feeling someone out there in Fink-beginners-land is Dying to yell at me. If I wasn't cramming my brain with CCNP studies and info for a new job as a level II DSL specialist (you wanna talk Bootcamp?!), I'd have the time (and patience) to be scouring the web for previously published answers.
