What do you mean with "but when I try to startx from within Fink"?

Normally you just type startx or click on the X Icon and that's it.
There is no fink startx needed or somethingk like that.

A question would be if there are any other non-fink Versions of
Xfree on your harddiks, e.g. Apple's X11 or Xfree86.org's?

If so then you should have installed system-xfree86 instead of xfree86.
