I've rebooted a number of times, without change.
I've emptied the .xinitrc file and replace its contents with:

source /sw/bin/init.sh  
exec gnome-session &
sawfish

Again, with no change. 

BTW, I've also removed everything (via command line) and started over 
(Three times now). The results are evident.
