Thanks to both Martin Costabel and Benjamin Reed, I was able to get things working.

Going to /sw/fink/dists and doing a "cvs up" as Benjamin Reed suggested, revealed:

cvspserver server: conflict: unstable/main/finkinfo/graphics/mplayer-0.90.0-2.info is modified but no longer in the repository
C unstable/main/finkinfo/graphics/mplayer-0.90.0-2.info

which I would not have noticed without what Martin Costabel wrote

There are probably error messages, you just don't recognize them as such.
Any line starting with "C", or anything about "move out of the way"?

So I moved /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/graphics/mplayer-0.90.0-2.info to the desktop and ran 'fink selfupdate-cvs again and everything worked as it should.

I am a bit surprised that it was so upset with that one file being there, but maybe it noticed that I had edited that file and so it did not trust it.
[I had changed mad to libmad in the 'BuildDepends' in order to get mplayer to install..]

Thank you for your help....and I apologize for incorrectly surmising that 10.2.8 was at fault.

Ed
