Yes you are correct, when its done I will go into Fink and install it. Thanks for throwing this back to the list, it turns out that this might be of interest to others.

That will compile XFree86 but not install it.

I was unaware (not having upgraded yet and being to lazy to check the package database) that there isn't a system-xfree86 package for 10.3 .

Sorry for any confusion.

Yeah I know it is very odd as its there, here is the output of the command you asked for:

AppleKick:/Users/TopKick root# sudo fink list xfree86

Then I tried to install it again and here is what happened:

AppleKick:/Users/TopKick root# sudo fink install system-xfree86
Information about 1106 packages read in 1 seconds.
Failed: no package found for specification 'system-xfree86'!
AppleKick:/Users/TopKick root#

In comparing outputs it looked like I should of used the command:

sudo fink install xfree86

and that seemed to work so its downloading now, so lets see.....

Do you mean it didn't install? "system-xfree86" is the name of the package. What do you get if you run "fink list xfree86"?

You either need to clear out your builtin X11 or install the system-xfree86 placeholder package. This behavior is normal for XFree86.

Folks,

I did a clean install of 10.3 and have installed fink last night, been having trouble ever since, my programs I am wanting are nmap, ettercap, proftpd, ethereal. Now I determined that ettercap and proftpd do not yet have new ports to 10.3 so that is fine however I cannot get everything to install correctly. I have done the updates to fink and its the latest version, I keep getting this X11 exists error message and I try to follow the suggestions but either its not working or I am doing something incorrectly or a combination of both. The exact errors and sequence of events are shown below.

You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86-base again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.
