Thanks. That seemed to work. I had tried a variety of .xinitrc files (both just sourcing init.sh in fink and the auto installed .xinitrc) so I thought I had routed out that problem. Apparently not, as it was the .xinitrc file. Greatly appreciated.

This is one of the standard problems as described in the fink documentation. There is a whole page dedicated to this situation http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/trouble.php#immedate-quit


The most likely cause is a faulty ~/.xinitrc file.
