Martin,

No luck yet. This is the log of what I did.

sudo dpkg -r --force-all xfree86-rootless-threaded

sudo dpkg -r --force-all netpbm-bin

both removed cleanly. I then checked and X11 opened fine, xterm worked as expected.

Next I went to install a package, just to see if it works.

a) via fink

Again the three choices, not seeing x11???

fink install xless
sudo /sw/bin/fink install xless
Information about 1119 packages read in 1 seconds.

fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual dependency. The
candidates:

(1) xfree86-base-threaded: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data
(2) xfree86-base: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data
(3) xfree86: XFree86 distribution

b)re-ran sudo apt-get -f install

This stops with the message,

You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.

But, fink list says the first is installed and the second is not available. Sorry to be so dense about this.

fink list | grep system|grep xfree
 i system-xfree86 2:4.3-1 [placeholder for user installed x11]

fink list | grep xtool

c) X11 is not managled, xterm opened up.
       reinstalled X11SDK from the CD

re-ran sudo apt-get -f install

and got,
