Have a look at your /sw/etc/fink.conf. Somehow you must have put a line
Buildpath: y
in there. Remove it.
Probably when running fink configure, you answered "y" to a question where you should have simply hit return.
yup. sure enough that was the prob. unfortunately still haven't got much further but at least it's not 'my' problem this time...
