As for the "failed to exec dpkg-split" errors, make sure your PATH has both /sw/bin and /sw/sbin in it (i.e. with "printenv PATH"), and check that /sw/bin/init.sh (or init.csh, depending on what shell you are using) looks OK--some people have had this error in the past due to corruption of their init.*sh file.
