[Fink-beginners] Font problem

I have Gaim installed and working.  But I can't make changes to its 
font settings.  Well, I can CHANGE them, but no matter what I select, 
it has no effect.  All I get it the default for everything:

I am running 10.3.everything with Apple's X11 and also have fink's 
applesystemfonts 1.0-15 installed.

Thoughts?
