Betreff: Re: [Fink-beginners] Fink needs you!
Hi all,
I'm new to this list and just want to thank everyone for providing so much
information and documentation to this very cool and useful project.
Section 1.3: Supported SystemsI recently went through the joys of installing Fink on my new iBook G4 (I'm
I would mention the two flavors of MacOS X 10.2 -- gcc3.3 and gcc < 3.3.
and a pointer to the section 3.6.
new to Mac, having done most of my development on PC/Windows or
UNIX/Linux) -- I read the docs, saw that if I wanted to compile source-based
packages I needed to download something called "Developer Tools."
I scrolled through, logged into Apple's site, and got the Dec 2002 Developer
Tools -- later, after noticing my version of gcc was out of date, I tried
downloading the Aug 2003 gcc 3.3 update -- and got an error that I needed OS
10.2 to install it. My iBook came with 10.3 pre-installed. Finally it
turned out I needed to download the 600MB+ Xcode 1.1 tools in order to get
gcc 3.3... since I'm in the position that I don't have high-speed internet
at home, I had to drive back and forth to a high-speed access point to make
these massive downloads. It'd be nice if the docs mentioned Xcode if a user
has OS X 10.3+
Thank you all again for the community and perhaps this will save someone
some unneeded downloading in the future!

Concerning the Developer Tools/Xcode:
If your computer comes with a preinstalled 10.2 then
you can find the installer for the DevTools in /Applications/Installers.
I think it is the same in 10.3.
If you buy the OS there is an extra CD in the box with the Developer Tools
or Xcode.
I think these facts should be included in the documentation to spare some
people an unnecessary download.
