Thanks Martin and Dan.
I followed Martin's advice and worked through the recipe in the Fink Faq 5.18 (I totally missed that entry when I was looking for a solution.)
The contents of the .deb seemed to be okay, but I went ahead and rebuilt the package. Then ensued many minutes of frustration as I attempted to copy/paste the command into the terminal, until I carefully began typing and, quite by accident, actually used the return key. Forehead slap of the day. (For those as unfamiliar as I am to working with the command line - a slash at the end of a command line followed by a return brings up a ? prompt, meaning the OS is waiting for you to continue your multi-line command. Doh.)
Having finally gotten the list file updated, I immediately removed xscreensaver-gtk2 in favor of xscreensaver, which worked without a hitch.
Then I purged, rebuilt and installed GLunarClock, which compiled just as smoothly. And I still can't find it in Gnome. <sigh>
