andrew, et al.,
thanx for all this and slowly stepping me as a newbie through it, too.
if found fink commander with the install, loaded it, updated it to verson 0.5.3, and it works great thus far.
yes, loading all the packages but not xemacs itself, is not very clear. ;o) maybe you should update the description and package web page to say just this -- just a suggestion, again.
i'll load xemacs itself and see and let you know.
i tried running both terminal and x11 xterm as you said. terminal displayed a proper path on the command line, xterm in x11 gave me "command not found" again.
sort of jury rigging from your f.a.q., i copied a ".xinitrc" file to my home directory and put both the line <x-tad-smaller>".</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller> /sw/bin/init.sh" and change the "xterm &" line to be "xterm -ls &" and restarted xterm and now it runs fine every time. so cool. thanx. ;o)</x-tad-smaller>
one more question --
so i also have loaded apple's darwin in a partition on an external hard drive and can switch boot to that. it's nice, but even with Xfree86 there, it's pretty plain jane.
so...
is there a way to load fink in a darwin-only, and if so, do you know how i do that (the command line there is even more mystifying than the os x terminal, or X11's xterm -- i don't even know how to make sure the network connections are working (in my case, an apple airport extremem card hooked into our house cable modem system))? is it possible to run fink or do cvs in darwin from scratch? if it's too long to print out in an e-mail, if you could maybe refer me to some on-line f.a.q. or description or how-to, that'd be great.
thanx again for all the help.
<x-tad-smaller>sincerely,

hi alexander, et al.,
oh. ok. fink seems to running fine now, thanx.
sorry for the confusion (and i'll have to reinstall oroborus and GIMP 2.0
as i uninstalled thinking they would interfere), but you might want to
update your readme. also, your web site contains what seems like a
nasty, ongoing flame war between you folks and open office os x
If you mean OpenOSX.com there has been discussion about removing the items as outdated. I'll bring it up on IRC sometime in the near future.
, which
now seems to be resolved. this is what caused the confusion for me and
kept me from installing and writing to you.
so maybe an update to the read me *and* the web site? just a suggestion.
The Readme is getting updated for 0.7.1 (out in a matter of days)
one question --
where (what directory) does fink install these things to?
/sw (by default--this should be the case if you used the binary installer)
i did successfully install fink. and it (seemingly) runs great from the
os x terminal program. strangely tho', it has problems in the X11 xterm.
when i do your "source /sw/bin/init.sh" (as i'm in bash for a shell), it
comes back with --
yuetsus-Computer:/ yuetsu$ source /sw/bin/init.sh
bash: grep: command not found
bash: grep: command not found
bash: cut: command not found
bash: grep: command not found
bash: grep: command not found
bash: cut: command not found
yuetsus-Computer:/ yuetsu$
strange. then when i tried to test it by installing a package i get a
whole bunch of failures like this --
curl -f -L -O
ftp://ftp.club.cc.cmu.edu/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.57.tar.bz2 Can't exec
"curl": No such file or directory at /sw/lib/perl5/Fink/Services.pm line

(4) Retry another mirror from your continent
(5) Retry another mirror
How do you want to proceed? [5] 5
no matter what i try in the way of downloading from other mirrors, it
keeps coming back saying it failed like this. any idea why os x terminal
does it just fine, but xterm in X11 has these problems?
Seeing differences between what you get from the OSX terminal and xterm under Apple's X11 is not uncommon:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#fink-not-found
But usually it's just the Fink environment stuff that's not getting read. In your case it looks like your system PATH isn't carrying over, either. You can verify this by opening an OSX terminal and an xterm and running
printenv PATH
in each.
Unfortunately, the FAQ entry needs updating: what you can do is modify the Application menu item that calls up your xterm to run
xterm -ls
as the command, rather than just "xterm". This invokes xterm as a login shell, and therefore should read your Fink environment in.
also, where does fink install the files to? i downloaded and installed
the full xemacs (xemacs-sumo-pkg) as i like it for a java & c
editor/compiler/debugger and for db work too, as well as ftp. the
install apparently completed ok, but if i type "xemacs" at any prompt, it
says command not found. tried grep'ing for xemacs but it just sits there
forever. any ideas/help here?
xemacs-sumo-pkg just installs all of the addon packages for xemacs, but not xemacs itself (which is confusing, admittedly). You need to install the xemacs package, too.
and thanx again for the responsiveness to myself, a newbie at this. i'm<snip>
also trying to install xchat via fink now as we speak. ;o)
sincerely,
