OH, no the fix in november IS the patch, RIGHT? I was thinking I had two conflicting files when I first saw this, but this should be right shouldn't it? What am I to understand about the 1854 19 and 1477 4?
The fix happened on Nov 4, in both the info and the patch file. The 1854 is the file size and the 19 is the day. The info file was changed in CVS the last time on Dec 19, 2004.
This doesn't solve your problem, of course. The point where it broke for you is exactly where the fix was aimed (definition of the variable "panic"). I have no more idea. Maybe something to do with the fact that you are running zsh?
