Note that for cdrecord to communicate with your burner, you must first unmount the burner. An easy way to do this is with disktool:

disktool -u /dev#/

To find out the device number, issue this command:

disktool -l

Disktool will list each device (hard drives, CD/DVD, etc), the mount point (if mounted) and the device number.
