It says "XFree864.4" because that's the basis from which Apple derives their X11. Unless you installed XFree86 yourself, of course...
The original description of your X11 startup situation sounds like the proper default behavior for Apple's X11, if I remember correctly. The messages are harmless-I get the same ones. You don't need to do anything about it.
I use x.org instead of Apple's X11 or xfree86. Both x.org and xfree86 can be installed via fink as in, fink install x.org. Apple's X11 requires additional installations as shown in the links Baba provided.
Again, software is installed using fink and not by downloading packages from other sites and then trying to get fink to install them-that won't work so if a package is not listed in fink ("fink list" typed in a terminal window) then you can't install it.
I tried the FinkCommander program, although I believe it's not very user friendly. I'd much prefer typing commands in the prompt. In FinkCommander, I cannot find x.org nor xfree86 although I do see something called
xfree86-base-threaded
xfree86-base-threaded-shlibs
Those are probably provided functionalites (not real packages).
xorg won't be visible by default unless you've turned on the unstable tree.
xfree86 isn't visible if you haven't updated your package list after installing fink.
I typed "fink list" in Terminal, and saw that "system-xfree86", "system-xfree86-dev", and "system-xfree86-shlibs" were installed (I am assuming as there is an "i" to the left of each item). For some reason, FinkCommander does not list these three items as installed.
This is because those aren't real packages--they are virtual packages set up by fink itself.
Could you or someone else please guide me on how to remove extraneous versions of X11 and to install either xfree86 or x.org? Thank you very much for your help.
You've got some strange things happening here. In Fink Commander, check your preferences and make sure you have the correct package lists enabled in the "fink" tab.
I'm going to leave the removal and installation of your X11 package to the experts on the list but you need to provide your OS version and fink info "fink --version" in a terminal window.
try "fink selfupdate" also to get the packages list updated.
You should have xorg listed as it is a standard package.
Not unless you've turned on the unstable tree.
