Well, I've got progress here. Deleting and replacing .Xauthority got me past the Xlib connection refused error.

with no .xinitrc, (default) started from command line, was able to open Vim. The top of the window is behind the Mac menu bar. with no .xinitrc, (default) started from double-clicking X11.app. Get a normal Mac window which can be grabbed and moved. Was able to start emacs.

When I added .xinitrc as Martin suggested, starting either way, got from console:

XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1280x1024 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
/Users/jo/.xinitrc: line 1: /sw/bin/init.sh
exec: No such file or directory
Quitting XDarwin...

So I looked, the file was there, somehow I had managed to make it Rich Text, so after thrashing around some, changed it in BBEdit to text. Still didn't see it. Repaired permissions, changed permissions back to system on the /bin directory and init.sh, but it still didn't see it. Moved an older one from another drive, still didn't see it. When I cd to /sw/bin/ and ls -1, the file is present.

However, X11 is running now, as I type. So thanks to your help, I have gone from "won't run at all" to a configuration problem. init.sh directs it to all the Fink software? I am happy. I'm an elderly CIS college student, and need a way to learn about this stuff.

(Levitated Dipole sounds like magic, AKH. Is your day job sorcery?)

Thanks,

Jody
