Don't use startx, start X by double-clicking on the XDarwin (or X11) icon, or use the open-x11 command.

        If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

As is says, there is either already a previously started X processs running, perhaps one that didn't get off the ground completely. Find it with "ps aux | grep X" and kill it, or use the ActivityMonitor app to find and kill it. Or (more likely) it has already crashed and left its lock file behind. Remove this with

  sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock

and then try again. When you start X via the finder, you can see its startup messages with Console.app.
