Don't use startx, start X by double-clicking on the XDarwin (or X11)
icon, or use the open-x11 command.

XDarwin 1.4a1
Fatal server error:

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
As is says, there is either already a previously started X processs
running, perhaps one that didn't get off the ground completely. Find it
with "ps aux | grep X" and kill it, or use the ActivityMonitor app to
find and kill it. Or (more likely) it has already crashed and left its
lock file behind. Remove this with
sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock
and then try again. When you start X via the finder, you can see its
startup messages with Console.app.
