Once you get installation worked out (or even before  ;-] ), you should
read <http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php?phpLang=en>,
particularly the section on the .xinitrc file, which is where you specify
which window manager to run. As an example my .xinitrc ends with:

quartz-wm --only-proxy &  # use quartz-wm to proxy between X11 and Aqua
exec blackbox             # use blackbox as the actual window manager
