My problem was some sort of conflict with the old fink installation. In fact I think somewhere on the fink web-site it was recommended that if running OS X 10.4, one should remove /sw and installed fink from scratch. That's what I did and it's OK now. I would like to mention that I had a number of exchanges with Alexander (K. Hansen) and he was superb throughout! Very patient and very quick with his help and he led me to the solution.
