This would mean that you installed xchat (and everything else) from a
precompiled binary, then.

The compiler packages may still be available from connect.apple.com 
Get the December 2002 Developer Tools package and the August 2003 gcc
Updater.

However, it is strange that everything doesn't work if you've
installed via binaries...it really is supposed to.
