I would suggest you download the compiled openoffice from
openoffice.org. It's not native OSX binary rather it works under X11.
I am using it now.
That's not quite true: just because something that was compiled on OS
X requires X11 doesn't mean that it's not OS X native. It just
doesn't use the native display.
I'm afraid, this discussion is beyond my knowledge about the Mac.
