This asterisk at the end triggered my memory which, unfortunately, is not what it used to be. You probably have 'ls' aliased to 'ls -F' or something similar. Do you perhaps have some additional aliases or shell variables defined that add invisible output to some shell commands, in particular GREP_OPTIONS? This could show you "gcc version" in red when you run gcc_select.
