The Fink home page has links to the mailing lists, including archives on 
gmane. The are also archives on sourceforge, accessible from the Fink 
sourceforge project page. If you google for "fink-beginners", you'll 
find even more archives, at least 3 others on the first page.

The Fink FAQ contains a lot of information about setting up X11, 
~/.xinitrc (in particular about not using /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but 
~/.xinitrc, and putting "source /sw/bin/init.sh" inside which you don't 
seen to have done), seting up gnome etc.
