I've been having the same problem on my AlBookG4. I ran fink with
the -v flag:

% fink -v install popt-shlibs
Information about 6240 packages read in 1 seconds.
The package 'popt-shlibs' will be built and installed.

The following package will be installed or updated:
popt-shlibs
perl(23271) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=229376) failed (error code=3)
perl(23271) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
perl(23271) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
Out of memory!

I hope this helps.
