Running OS 10.4.8 on MacBookPro, with Apple's X11 (v.1.1.2) and fink
distribution version 0.1.8 rsync i386.

I've used fink recently to download several binary and source packages,
apparently successfully, including the gnome and gnome-session packages.
Being a Linux user, I'd love to put a rooted gnome desktop on my MacBook.

I've tried to start gnome window manager several ways, most recently by
including the lines "quartz-wm --only-proxy &" followed by "exec
/sw/bin/gnome-session" in my .xinitrc file (as suggested in fink faq on
"Running X11" (and with X11 preferences set to 'enable enter full screen').
When I do this I get the following error message:
"The setting daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was:
Failed to activate "OAFIID: GNOME_Settings Daemon"." And a generic,
gray X11 full-screen window, from which I can switch back to Aqua with
<opt-command-A>.

Naturally, I have no clue how to jiggle the GNOME_Settings Daemon.
Any suggestions?

Thanks, Bob W.
