It was deliberately chosen not to have the updating be done by selfupdate.
In this case a relatively large number of packages needed to be
updated and there was concern that imperfections in the dependency
trees might cause users to have half-updated setups if there were any
failures.  The script tries to avoid this by installing binaries
first.
