Your guess is correct and the configuration output reads:

checking for stpcpy... no

Sorry, no easy place for me to post the file, so I'm mailing you 
config.log. It exceeds 10,000 lines, of which a dozen or so refer to 
stpcpy. I'm a user, not a hacker, so it's just gibberish to me. :)

By this do you mean that the maintainer of the lyx package has given it 
up? Should I be looking for an alternative method to get lyx installed 
on my machine?
