Right, but it doesn't happen all of the time:  I had 755 permissions  
on one of my computers, and the installer was OK, whereas on another  
computer I had the error and had to change them to 775.

It might be the case that this only occurs when there is a receipt for  
a prior Fink install.  The machine where I didn't have a problem was  
brand new when I installed Fink, whereas on the other one I had moved  
my Fink tree out of the way to test the installer out.
