I have now got direct ftp access. I have to use proxy for http, though.
I have configured fink accordingly. I started with the installation of
xfig using fink. Although there were possibly some error/warning
messages, xfig got installed.

When I invoke xfig, I get a lot of error messages, though. One of the
error messages is that I am not using the latest version of app-defaults,
but according to the FinkCommander, I have the latest version of
app-defaults. Another error message is that xfig cannot export the files.

Thinking that there is some problem with the latest version of xfig, I
tried installing the previous version of xfig, namely, xfig323. I get the
following error message:

Err http://bindist.finkmirrors.net 10.5/release/main xfig323 3.2.3d-4
   Could not connect to bindist.finkmirrors.net:80 (17.254.17.246). -
connect (60 Operation timed out)

This message comes several times and the program exits, with the
suggestion that it is unable fetch some archives and that I may run
apt-get update. When I invoke the command sudo apt-get update, the
program gets stuck at

40% [Connecting to bindist.finkmirrors.net (17.254.17.246)] and I get the
message, Failed to fetch
http://bindist.finkmirrors.net/bindist/dists/10.5/current/crypto/binary-darwin-i386/Packages

Could not connect to bindist.finkmirrors.net:80 (17.254.17.246). - connect
(60 Operation timed out). This message comes many times and the program
exits.

I want to know whether I still have some proxy related problems - at
present I have direct ftp and rsync access. http access is through a
proxy. Is the problem with xfig (latest) due to not having all
consistent files. Why is the apt-get program not working?

Thanks.

Kannan
