I don't think you are supposed to run a shell as user postgres. That's
why it does not allow login with a password, has no login shell
("/dev/null") and no home directory ("/var/empty"). You can use it to
run commands as it says in "fink info postgresql83", namely for example
sudo -u postgres createdb mydb
