After the app is first run, successive starts were much quicker. My understanding is that fonts are being cached, etc. Have you tried more than once to start it? Also, does that "several minutes" also include starting X?
On the other hand, I just installed xemacs on a Macbook running 10.5, and it started promptly (less than a second if X was already running, about three seconds if ran the from Terminal.app and X had to start.
