You're not misusing dpkg, except in the since that libXt.dylib is part
of X11, and not of the Fink distro, so that dpkg can't know about it.

I misdiagnosed what went on here--it must have been the removal of the
Fink .la files that triggered the change in your build output.

I just talked to the maintainer and the fix just got moved to stable, so
after a selfupdate you'll see it (the revision isn't changed).
