It looks like gildas has been finding libXpm inderectly rather than

Just because you have a working executable doesnt mean that it was
installed by your current Fink installation.  What do you get from
"which gildas"?

You're free to install stuff by hand, and most packages allow you to
vary where you install them.  There may be directions in the gildas
source archive or on its webpage to help you do that.  You just want to
make sure not to install in your Fink tree.
