Actually, thinking about it, how about checking the output of

dpkg -c
/sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/languages/gcc44-compiler_4.4.4-1000_darwin-x86_64.deb


It just occurred to me that the "gcc44-compiler" gripe may be from your
prior attempt, and it may be OK no.
