I did a fink selfupdate, followed by a fink update-all and then fink
install octave but got the same error as before.

Right. Like I said, I was trying to install octave. It apparently installs
fltk-x11
as a dependency.

The command I used (that failed) was "fink install octave" so I'm not sure
what I need to do different.
