this is no feature request, only an idea.

could it not be nice, to have some interactive feedback when trying to 
run commands (that is, programs) provided through fink, but currently 
not installed? which could be provided by shell (or perl) placeholders 
instead of the real binaries.

assumption:

somebody has fink, but a rather basic installation. hears about a 
command "convert", tries it out / needs it.

not there => message:

"the package imagemagick is required to execute the command "convert". 
do you want to download and compile the sourcecode of the program and 
it's dependencies (<list of dependencies>)?
...

could offer also binary download etc. main problem presumably would be 
the check for non-fink installations (would be no problem if the 
fink-bin directory would be the guaranteed last in the search path, 
but...).

one can argue about the lack of additional hard-core functionality; but 
i would find such an option rather friendly.
