Unfortunately, I can't get ftmac to build in either XFree86 or freetype2-standalone without manual build hacking.* We may want to make our freetype2 build with ftmac support (won't work on darwin) and hinting (if not already enabled), and have XFree86 use it too (This is also a good example of how variants would be useful).This is something that we'll figure out before the 4.3.0 release. I've mentioned this before, but a goal of the XFree86 and Fink projects should be that Fink should have to carry zero diffs to XFree86 forward after 4.3.0. Fink developers are doing good stuff and where there are diffs I strongly encourage people to push patches upstream. (Either formally at the XonX patch page or informally to me.) This is a good example of something that needs work and should be fixed properly for everyone in the mainline.
Some more experimentation shows that it effectively replaces type1inst as well.* Our font package currently use 'ttfmkfontdir'. They should be switched over to using 'mkfontscale'.
