Let's see if we can find out why this happens.

Just now, I gave a try :

Yes, this is Finder garbage.

su xavier -c 'cvs -z3 update -d -P'
? .DS_Store
? 10.2/.DS_Store
? 10.2/test
? 10.2/experimental/.DS_Store
? 10.2/experimental/carstenklapp/.DS_Store
? 10.2/experimental/carstenklapp/finkinfo/.DS_Store
? 10.2/stable/main/finkinfo/graphics/freetype2-2.0.8-4.info
? 10.2/stable/main/finkinfo/graphics/freetype2-2.0.8-4.patch
[etc]
? 10.2/unstable/main/finkinfo/libs/expat-1.95.5-3.info
? 10.2/unstable/main/finkinfo/libs/expat-1.95.5-3.patch
This one is interesting, because it was on the air for only 5 hours on Dec 03. A rare catch ;-)
[etc]

You must have done something other to your 10.2 tree than "fink selfupdate" or cvs commands. Either you copied all these files from somewhere else by hand into 10.2, but then you would have remembered and told us so, wouldn't you?

Or you did something dramatic such as removing all the CVS directories in /sw/fink/ and then "fink selfupdate-cvs", a procedure that is recommended as a remedy for corrupted CVS directories. This would have the effect you are seeing. According to your record, you would have done this at least twice, once around Nov 28 and once on Dec 04 or thereabouts.

I'm curious, do you remember what you did?
