This happens occasionally--I've never heard a good explanation for it,
though.

You may be able to fix this if /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status-old is available,
and not also damaged:

sudo cp /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status-old /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status
