Sometimes it is very hard to influence this order. In particular inside configure scripts, as it was the case in this thread, it is not easy to see from which sequence of *-config --cflags or similar commands they construct their compiler command line.
I still have difficulties to understand what brain fart led the freetype2 people to name their header file freetype/freetype.h instead of freetype2/freetype.h, for example.You sure didn't really try _ seems you underestimate yourself -)
