The quick start doc should also mention that the X11 SDK should also be installed in order to compile X11 apps against the Apple's X11 (if not, Fink proposes to replace your Apple's X11 with all the XFree86 stuff).
And I would add that X11 SDK must be installed before X11, so order: Developer tools, X11 SDK, X11, fink
