May I respectfully ask that changes of this size be discussed or st least be announced on fink-devel first? I can see that it was discussed on IRC, but even there it was said

Generally they are, but as it was a rather small change (albeit to a decent number of packages) I asked if anyone could think of why it would be an issue, and went along... Next time I'll post to the list.

So, let's see, just because *maybe* Apple will introduce a bug in their perl in next year's OSX, you change all Fink package descriptions now without asking or telling the maintainers? I don't get it. If you want to play with Tiger alpha now, then by all means change your local fink tree, but why impose this on all of us? And in the stable tree no less, while a bindist is being prepared?

Yes, I agree doing it in stable was a bad idea, I'll back that out right now, however, my main desire is to avoid what happened the last couple of major OS releases, and that is that we think "ah, it's coming way in the future, we'll get it working" and we end up with months of flaky and unusable packages when tiger comes out. I've got 3 weeks of hacking time coming up and I want to take advantage of it. It's not worth getting constant conflicts in a cvs up with a locally-modified version of these packages when in all but a few cases (like yours) it's a harmless change.

I know why I hate IRC. No time to think.

E-Mail isn't always better, it seems. :P Yes, I should have checked with -devel, but the world isn't going to end.
