DRM and I have discussed this. We are aware of the issue, but as always
we are taking a calm approach to it. Given the fact that the mistake was
reported promptly and a fixed version offered very quickly as well, the
likelyhood of some user getting a broken version is fairly small. We
will monitor the lists for a few more days and then go on providing more
information.

I hope this answers your question. You can rest assured, that I will
take any steps necessary to ensure our users get the very best we can
offer :)

But the bad version was out there for about 30 hours. Surely I'm not the only unstable user who did a selfupdate in those 30 hours. The only obvious symptom of the problem is that you don't have any new packages to update. It'll take awhile for everyone to realize they have a problem. Meanwhile, they aren't getting any updates to their packages, and some of those updates could be security related. I only found out about the problem because I monitor this mailing list, but we shouldn't expect every fink user to monitor Fink Devel if he wants to know about major fink problems.

Why not be proactive and tell people how to fix the problem with their fink? Surely this is the very best that can be offered?

happy fink user

It's going to be disseminated anyway: every user who has a problem that a selfupdate would fix (new package, etc.) needs to be told that they need to fix their fink package if they have 0.22.0 .

Why wait til then to tell them? How would the Apple community react if Apple's Software Update stopped checking for updated software, but appeared to still be working, and Apple knew about it, and had a fix, but didn't tell anyone about it unless they figured out that it wasn't working and asked Apple about it? I think many users would be upset that there was updated software available, and that Software Update wasn't telling them about it How is this any different than the situation with fink 0.22.0? If users are told in a timely fashion they will be happy that the bug was fixed quickly. If they don't find out until much later they will feel upset that no one deigned to tell them about it.

Anyway, my fink is working, and I'll stop worrying about the other fink users, as no one else seems to care about them. I'll drop this subject.

Kevin
