I found another issue with plplot. It installs some files in /sw/lib/octave/site/oct/powerpc-apple-darwin7.4.0/. Apparently it uses the directory powerpc-apple-darwin7.4.0 because I was using 10.3.4 when I build octave. However, what happens if a user is using 10.3.x when building octave and then plplot? The directory will be powerpc-apple-darwin7.x.0, and thus the .deb file will be different, dependent on the OS X version

Any suggestions how I can solve this (if it is a problem at all)?

I would suggest that you explicitly state the host to configure and leave off the version numbers. It is a problem, as all our .debs are supposed to be the same.
