It finds these things here too. But it doesn't use X11-libs for freetype. It uses this thing just for x11-term and things like that. I checked configure too and I couldn't find how /usr/X11R6/lib could possible be added. But I don't understand configure very good.

Do you really have freetype support, say:

set term png font 'pathto/somefont.ttf'

works in gnuplot?
