The way I've heard it explained, it's not really "dropped", it's undefined behavior in the C++ standard, and everyone just assumes it works that way because it works on ELF systems (which is most all systems).
I'm sure googling for "darwin" and "static initializers" will come up with all kinds of fun threads on the subject.
