Here what I understand of the problem:
ncurses-dev is provided by the ncurses-shlibs (5.3-20031018) package. It is flagged as essential, so Fink will try to keep it installed. On the other hand, libncurses5 replaces ncurses-dev and so it will be removed if one install libncurses5 (or install a package which depends on it). If one do a fink selfupdate, Fink will reinstall ncurses-dev because it is an essential package. The next selfupdate will (sometimes ?) reinstall libncurses5, and remove ncurses-dev, and so on.
How can this be solved ?
A side question: Why both libcurses5 and ncurses-shlibs install a ncurses package (versions 5.3-20031018 and 54-20041023 respectively) ?
